Ebetsu Ceramic Art Center Nishinopporo, Ebetsu-city, Hokkaido 069-0832 Tel: 011-385-1004
Ebetsu-city has been a thriving ceramic arts center ever since Shinobu Komori established a kiln in 1949. Ebetsu style earthenware reminds one of everyday life customs and traditions of former times in the region. The brick industry, for example, has a tradition dating back over one hundred years. This Ceramic Art Center was founded with the theme of "Pottery Hometown" by Ebetsu-city in 1994. There are over three hundred potters in Hokkaido and ECAC exhibits works from seventy kilns in a permanent exhibition space. It also exhibits the ancient Chinese-style ware thrown by KUMORI Shizuo who was known as a researcher of Chinese wares and glazing techniques. Of course, products from the brick industry are also on display. A visit to ECAC provides an insight into regional ceramic history as well as an appreciation of its unique traditions. Workshop and exhibition rental space are also available.
