Brief Bio of Nagaoka Ami

by Robert Yellin
for The Japan Times, 2000 August 26

Sometsuke (cobalt blue porcelain) potter Ami Nagaoka will be showing a whopping 280 pieces at Shibuya Kuroda Toen, (03) 3499-3225, from Sept. 1-6, 2000.

Nagaoka has been a potter for close to 30 years and creates most of her work using a tebineri (hand forming) method. It shows in the slight unevenness and warmth of her work. She then paints her animal motifs (lucky rabbits included) and geometrical patterns on the porcelain surface. That charm recently brought her some new fans -- French President Jacques Chirac and his wife, who purchased her work in a Shuzenji gallery after the recent summit. I'm sure they're finding Nagaoka's ceramics a joy to use back in France.
