SUMMER 2005: A new Living National Treasure was named this summer for his tetsu-yu (iron glazes). His name is Hara Kiyoshi (1936-). Hara was born in Shimane prefecture and studied with past LNTs Ishiguro Munemaro starting in 1954 and then briefly with Shimizu Uichi. After studying with these masters Hara established a kiln in Tokyo in 1965 before moving to his present location in Saitama prefecture in 1980. Hara is noted for his deep iron glazes and motifs of horses and birds. He is a past winner of the Japan Ceramic Society Award
